2006 Vintage Final Blending Session In this photo (from left): Kirk Venge, Eric Cupp, Kim Frazier-Caterino. Adam Caterino is not shown (he's the photographer)!
2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
Wine releases are a great deal of fun! After a year of growing grapes, obsessive attention to detail during harvest, crush, and fermentation, several years of barrel aging, declassifying lots, blending, and finally bottling everything comes to fruition when a new wine is released and all of the hard work is ready for everyone to enjoy. Our mentality before a release is akin to that of a kid in a candy store. The anticipation, excitement, and pride that go into every wine release is something that we all share in as a team. While each wine seems to become our new favorite, our annual release of Cabernet Sauvignon is what really gets us excited! Having two incredibly talented, passionate, and dedicated individuals working on the wines has been a pleasure to say the least. While Kirk Venge joined us last year as winemaker, he actually has a hand in the 2006 and 2007 vintages. All of the wines from the 2006 vintage were blended and bottled by Kirk. The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon has a final blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc and was bottled unfined and unfiltered early this year after 25 months in 90% new French oak. The wines seem to have a certain richness to them not previously found in Frazier Cabernet. The wines are still in need of a nice decanting before they are to be enjoyed, but after an hour in the decanter they explode with dark fruit and a hint of sweet tannin. Production in 2006 was down while barrel selection was limited. The end result is a mere 700 cases of Cabernet produced.
We are quite fond of this wine and have sampled it many times throughout the year. Most recently we enjoyed this wine with braised lamb shanks, a phenomenal pairing! Other times, a dry aged rib eye steak paired with the wine made for a great pairing. We do have one final wine release for 2009; an 8 barrel bottling (200 cases) of Memento which will be released in early December. We recently began previewing the '06 Memento in the tasting room to get some customer feedback and it has been a huge hit! Don't worry, we are saving the bulk of it for our wine club and mailing list members..you won't want to miss out!
We hope that you enjoy the new vintage of Frazier Cabernet.
Cheers!!

 2009 Cabernet Franc Crush Update
On Saturday, October 10th crush 2009 commenced with the harvest of 3.5 tons of Cabernet Franc! Monday, October 12th we harvested all of our premium Merlot grapes; around 7 tons of fruit. Thankfully we were able to fully develop the flavors and ripen these two varietals before early season rain came into the picture. Pictured above is the Cabernet Franc in the midst of a late morning pumpover. As of this writing, we along with all of our neighbors in Coombsville are still hanging our Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot grapes despite recent pounding winds and rain. As many of you know, rain is a great foe of premium grapes as it has a tendency to cause rot among tight clusters hanging on vines, sugar levels can also go down and along with the decreased sugars flavors can also be washed out. Everyone in viticulture and winemaking at Frazier is very optimistic about the remainder of harvest given that the two remaining varietals to be harvested both have thick skins and can tolerate rain. If the vineyard is given a few days to dry out the grapes will again reach their ideal physiological ripeness and will be ready for crush. For those of you who like elegant and nuanced Cabernet there is early talk around Napa that 2009 might be a vintage of complexity, more French in style. | |
